The Canale Maestro walking and cycling route connects Chiusi to Arezzo and is the ideal path for “slow travel” lovers. It was originally laid down in order to control the drainage of the nearby channels and is now a flat nature trail which can be used either for hiking or cycling.
The route crosses the entire Val di Chiana valley and is particularly important because of its historical origins and the beauty of the landscape around it: because of the impressing scenery of the Chiana Valley, many tourists choose to walk or cycle on this route every year.
This flat, safe route is perfect both for families travelling with children and for those who enjoy visiting picturesque villages and meeting local people . The route crosses several little towns which produce fruit, wine and olive oil: you will come across beautiful “piazzas” , wine cellars, oil mills and craft shops. Get ready for an unforgettable, off the beaten track experience across the Chiana valley- a unique experience which will lead you to the hidden heart of the valley, impossible to reach by car or train. Get ready to discover and enjoy Tuscany’s hidden corners!
The route
Starting from Chiusi railway station, cycle for 62km on a flat, dirt road. The route can be divided into 4 parts:
1. From Chiusi to Montepulciano lake
2. The Sienese Chiana valley; from Chiusi and Montepulciano’s “chiari” lakes to Foiano della Chiana.
3. The Aretinian Chiana valley: cropped fields and artistic cities.
4. From Arezzo’s bridges to Chiusa dei monaci bridge
We suggest cycling on the route during spring/autumn. Sure, it is possible to cycle in summer as well – obviously paying attention to avoid periods of extremely hot weather. For those who want to combine travel and sport, the route is perfect for winter training, though it may not be the best choice for those who prefer to enjoy a sunny holiday.
